Summer is time for us in the High School office to review the past school year and plan for the next one. What a wonderful year it was! Our graduating class this year earned $416,900 in scholarship money to help with college expenses. Twenty-four North Collins students ended this year qualifying for at least three (some up to eighteen) college credits! This is a terrific head start to college or technical school at a fraction of the cost. For our younger students, Regents results in almost every area were quite outstanding. We are still waiting for results on the 7th and 8th grade tests but the raw scores are promising. Your children are truly getting a strong education in the North Collins district. There are more opportunities for Honors courses and college credit courses than ever before. For students who typically struggle in school, quality support is provided and most are doing very well in their coursework.
By the time you read this, we will all be starting to think about school opening in September. In addition to our annual 7th Grade Orientation, we will hold a 9th Grade Orientation this year. At 6:30 p.m. on August 31, the counselors and I will meet with all incoming 9th grade students and their parents. Although they know the school and the rules, life will be different for these new high school students beginning in September. We will walk all of them through the credits they now need to earn toward graduation, talk about the science lab requirements necessary, offer information about preparation for education after high school, discuss college credit opportunities at NCHS, and answer any questions the audience may have. I hope to see all 9th graders that evening.
The summer reading lists have been revised this year to encourage our students to continue reading throughout the weeks away from school. There are a nice variety of books, offering choices that should appeal to all learners. The North Collins Library is air conditioned and so beautifully cool – what a great place to spend some time this summer!
Enjoy your families, rest, relax, and recharge. We are planning another school year full of all kinds of opportunities for our students. See you in September!
