A Calendar of Upcoming Cultural Events in Western New York

A new initiative of WNY's arts and cultural community to build a cultural sector calendar of major events, exhibition openings, fundraisers and special programs. This is a special collaborative project of the Advancing Arts and Culture Technology Action Group with support from the Arts Council in Buffalo & Erie County and Carnegie Art Center.

In her solo exhibition, Dominance and Affection, artist Bethany Krull playfully examines our relationships with pets. With the help of their caregivers and art educator Clare Poth, toddlers will create their own playful pet sculptures. Come dressed to get messy.

Lecture: Darien Johnson and Sunwha Kim

In conjunction with the biennial exhibition Art in Craft Media, the Burchfield Penney Art Center hosts a lecture on opposite years that address the current trends in the area of Craft Art. Darien Johnson and Sunwha Kim are new faculty members in the Design Department at Buffalo State College. Mr. Johnson, a ceramic artist and Ms. Kim a woodworker will speak about their work and how it fits into the larger arena of craft..

learn several book bindings that are particularly decorative in nature and sure to impress your friends and family.  We'll sew several variations of the Japanese stab binding, which is perfect for horizontally-formatted books made with stacked sheets of paper. Well also explore the vast design possibilities of the ancient long stitch binding. Some sewing and/or bookbinding experience is helpful, but not required

Visit artists at work in a former windshield wiper factory at the Buffalo Arts Studio.  Potters, painters and photographers all call the Studio home and a walk through its spacious hallways can be a provocative intorduction to new directions in contemporary art.

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center

Arts icons Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo helped to found the legendary Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center while students in Buffalo in the mid-70's.  Today the gallery has moved to an exciting new space in Babeville (formerly the Church) in downtown Buffalo and continues to push the envelope of style and subject matter.
